1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 – Mecum Los Angeles Auction

Mecum’s upcoming Los Angeles auction will feature one of the rarest and most desirable Corvettes on the planet. This 1968 L88 Corvette will cross the auction block on February 18th.

This is one of only 80 L88s to be produced for the 1968 model year. It is also one of only 13 L88 convertibles known to still exist. The L88 was conservatively rated at 430 horsepower by Chevrolet but actual output was closer to 550 horses. Remember, this was at a time when Uncle Sam and the insurance companies were clamping down on the muscle car and Chevrolet didn’t want to stir up trouble with either entity.

Prices in the past have hovered between $300,000 to $600,000 for the L88. Convertibles, due to their more obscure numbers, tend to bring more at auction. One thing is for certain, whoever takes this car home will have bragging rights for owning one of the most coveted Corvettes ever created.

Update: The Corvette did not meet reserve with a high bid of $475,000.
